Week 2: Thursday's Top Performers
Grosse Pointe South WR Jimmy Saros has been putting up outstanding numbers over the past few seasons and last night, he continued his blistering start to this season. In a win over Port Huron Northern, Saros had 10 receptions for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Zeeland West senior FB Andrew Plaska is not a player who gets a ton of recruiting hype, but that may change. Last night against Coopersville in a state title game rematch, Plaska ripped through the Bronco defense for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns on 18 carries.
After being one of the state leaders in rushing last season, DeAndre Johnson of Madison Heights Madison appears to be on pace to do it again. In their win over Lakeview last night, the speedy tailback rushed for 225 yards on 21 carries, 3 touchdowns and also had an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
One sleeper in Detroit who doesn't always get enough pub is Detroit Central QB Kevin Smith. Smith showed why he is a Big Ten level recruit by going 8 for 10, 232 yards, 3 touchdowns and 108 yards rushing in a win over Chadsey.
Detroit Northwestern CB Anthony Hollis had a 52 yard touchdown catch and a kickoff return for a score to power the Colts past Detroit Kettering.
One player we saw last week and were impressed with was Hudsonville RB Jordan Jonker. Last night, he had 161 yards and 3 touchdowns in a big win over Lowell.
Muskegon Heights DE Steve Winston is one of our favorite players and he is again wreaking havoc on opposing offenses. So far this season, he has 21 tackles (10 last night) and a sack.
Michigan State commit Charles Burrell and Southeastern bounced back after last week's loss. Burrell was 11 for 21, 210 yards with one touchdown through the air and rushed for 2 as well as Southeastern beat Mumford 33-6.
Cincinnati commit George Winn rushed for 150 yards and a TD but it wasn't enough as Ann Arbor Huron defeated U of D Jesuit 23-20. The Bearcats' other running back recruit from Detroit, Darrin Williams of Detroit King rushed for 138 yards.
Defense was the name of the game for Detroit Crockett as they won 47-8 over Finney. DE Shelton Gaines, a scout.com All-Combine performer had 10 tackles and 2 sacks as did OLB Amery Allen.
Ypsilanti tailback Martez Dykes, another big time sleeper in the state rushed for 251 yards on 23 carries and 4 touchdowns in a win over Edsel Ford.
In a big time westside showdown, West Catholic topped Allendale 25-22. QB Kirk Deering passed for three touchdowns for West Catholic. Allendale junior RB/FB Hersey Jackson had 136 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
The Detroit News and the Grand Rapids press contributed to this compliation.
