Mackenzie Players Deal With Uncertainty
The effect is felt by all students including members of the Mackenzie football team. The Stags went 6-3 in the regular season before falling in the first round of the state playoffs. Several of the players are Division 1 recruits and have been taking the time to research other area schools in order to find a new home. For several of them, the right choice appears to be Martin Luther King High School.
"Like 10 of our players are going over there," said defensive end Nick Perry, the most highly recruited of Mackenzie's players, "myself, linebacker Mario Stewart and linebacker Edgar Pouncey are all starters from the defense."
They will be added to a King roster that already included talented players like QB/S Donovan Dickerson and RB Darrin Williams, who is already anticipating the possibilities for this season given the new additions.
"We have some big linemen coming over and Nick Perry, so I think we're ready to make a run at the state title," Williams said.
Another top recruit of Mackenzie's ended up elsewhere. DT Anthony Woods, a 6'4, 295-lber who has had interest from colleges since his sophomore season will be at Melvindale this fall. Melvindale coach Phil Howard confirmed that Woods has already enrolled at the school.
