Deliz plans to be a leader this year

Jeff Deliz might be a future star in the Mid-American Conference but the 6-foot, 200-pound tailback-free safety is now focusing on leading Clinton Township Chippewa Valley to a successful high school playoff season.

Deliz is back for his third varsity season as a two-way starter. “I felt I had a really good year last year,” he said. “I got to carry the ball more and played very well on defense. I was second on the team in tackles.”

Year-round, Deliz trains with Tommy Boyd at the Fraser Ice Arena, working on his speedwork.

“It helps make me a better player,” Deliz said. “I ran the 40 in 4.7 last year. Right now, I’m at about 4.5 seconds.”

As a free safety, Deliz is able to make his way around the field in such a fashion that college coaches are taking notice.

“I’m definitely looking to be a leader,” he said. “My role is to make tackles. They expect me to make up to 100 tackles this year. They expect big things from me on offense and defense.”

And Deliz would only be too happy to oblige.

“With our defense, opposing linemen try to take out the linebacker,” he said. “The linebackers take out the blockers and then it’s up to me to help out with the tackle.”

Deliz and his coach, Mike Carr, are hoping to lead Chippewa Valley to title contention this season. The team was 7-2 during the regular season last year and Deliz averaged 8.5 yards per carry.

“We return 15 starters. We should have a good season,” Carr said.

“We could take it very far,” Deliz said. “We’re expecting some big things. We just have to come together. When we came back from summer team camp, you could tell this team was ready. We’re expecting big things from this team.”

And Chippewa Valley is expecting big things from Deliz, who said his college choice is still up in the air, but Central Michigan and Michigan State are at the top of his list right now. He said he’ll make up his mind at the end of the season.

“Academics will be a big part of my decision,” said Deliz, who has a 3.9 grade point average. “I’m looking onto the field of medicine. The main thing will be academics.”
