Wassink Has Successful Debut

Grand Rapids South Christian (Mich.) class of 2015 quarterback Jon Wassink had a big year, and is a kid who should see more recruiting attention come his way over the next two years.

Jon Wassink was a big part of South Christian's state title winning season this year. The 6'2, 185-lb sophomore stepped in on varsity and completed 67% of his passes for 2,368 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also ran for six scores.

"It was really fun," he said. "A lot of the seniors helped me. I knew a couple of them and they helped me along, accepted me, helped take pressure the off, and just allowed me to play football."

Wassink did not just play, he lead his team out of a tough early season start all the way to the state title game. However, a broken collarbone forced him to miss that final game. His team carried on and won with him cheering on from the sidelines.

"It was really disappointing, but still really cool to see all those guys out there succeeding and I think throughout the year, we fought through a lot of adversity. We were 4-3, had to win out, and from there, we won, I don't know how many straight games. It showed a lot about our team fighting through everything. It was really cool."

There are already folks in West Michigan whispering about Wassink potentially being the next highly recruited quarterback from the lakeshore, and the process has already started.

"I've gotten a couple things sent to the school to my coach from Michigan and Michigan State."

Wassink has already started going to camps as well.

"I did, I went to Michigan. I've always loved Michigan. I thought the camp was really cool. They had a lot of good stuff to say and what I learned from the coaches from other high schools and other colleges was helpful."

Now that the offseason is upon him, Wassink has some clear cut plans.

"Well, after I get healed up, I play basketball, so I'll be playing basketball in the winter. The spring, I'll be working on different football stuff."
