Heading into Ithaca’s semifinal showdown with Shelby Saturday afternoon, the Yellow Jackets were riding a 40 game winning streak in hopes of making that 41 with another trip to Detroit.
Led by a four touchdown performance from junior quarterback Travis Smith, Ithaca did just that with a 31-14 win.
“It’s a great feeling to get that fourth straight semifinal win and get back to the state championship for the third year in a row and its just an amazing feeling,” Smith told GoBlueWolverine.
“I saw the coverage breakdown in the secondary and the receivers knew where to be. I just got them the ball.”
Despite Smith’s four touchdowns, including three through the air and one on the ground, the highly regarded in-state quarterback faced a little bit of adversity on his way to throwing three interceptions. Good news is Smith never wavered and continued to stick with the confidence he has in his ability.
“I have such a great team around me they pick me up when I’m down and its just so easy to lead this team cause they’re all just great players, great teammates, great friends and football is just a team sport,” said Smith.
Still early, and with no scholarship offers on the table, the Wolverines hold a special place in the heart of Smith who grew up in a maize and blue family.
“My family has been a Michigan fan since I was little so I’ve always watched them on Saturdays,” said Smith. “Its just a great school, great education and great athletics.”
Smith tripped to Ann Arbor for the Wolverines blowout win over Illinois earlier this fall. The experience proved more than memorable for Smith who walked away seeing plenty of enjoyable aspects.
“Oh my gosh it’s a way different experience going from a high school game to the big house,” said Smith. “Its just a great atmosphere and just hopefully someday I can experience an atmosphere like that.”
“I like to run, I like to pass. That’s just a great offense and hopefully someday I can play in an offense like that somewhere.”
As Michigan continues to evaluate quarterbacks in the class of 2014, and with no offers out to any as of yet, Smith is on the Wolverines radar but let GoBlueWolverine know that scholarship talk is still premature at this point.
“Not anything yet,” said Smith. “I’ve just been talking to them a few times a week and not sure yet so we’ll see.”
If that Michigan offer were to come, Smith would find it awfully difficult to pass up.
“It would be a huge effect on my recruiting,” said Smith. “I wouldn’t say I’d commit right away but I’d have to go home and talk to my family and talk to everyone that’s helped me since I was little. It’s a big decision.”
