Iowa CITY, Iowa - Kevin Nickelberry felt the key toThursday's game against would be his Howard team handing Iowa's pressure.
The coach was right. Unfortunately for him, the Bison struggled with the Hawkeyes' defense in the half-court and full-court. Iowa rolled 66-36.
"he defense was great," Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said. "I mean, we contained penetration. We pressed them and rebounded well. You know, we got after their good players, the guys that we were worried about."
Howard had 16 points at halftime and shot 14 of 52 (26.( percent) from the floor for the game. The visitors also turned the ball over 13 times with only six assists.
"We felt like this was a game we could run, and we really wanted to push the ball," McCaffery said. "It happened a little bit in the first half, obviously much more in the second half. We got out, and once we got it comfortably above 20, then they hit a couple shots, but we felt like we were in control of the game. And that's how we want to play, we want to play fast.
The Carver-Hawkeye Arena facilities team might need to straighten the rim after Thursday's game. The teams combined to shoot 7 of 37 from beyond the arc.
"None of it was poor shot selection," McCaffery said his his team. "The only thing you could have said was a couple times we shot it quick, but everybody was open. I'm very comfortable with the shots we took.
