Holding up a custom blue T-shirt with "Kentucky Bound" printed on it, Young chose the Cats over Michigan State, Kansas and Syracuse.
"Kentucky has just always been my dream school," Young said on ESPNU's 'Recruiting Nation' program. "I've always dreamed of going to that school, and once I went there to visit, I just fell in love with the place -- the great atmosphere, the great coaching, the great facilities and the great basketball history behind it. I just loved the school."
Asked if Calipari's track record of developing high NBA Draft picks was a factor in his decision, Young said: "It did have a little bit of a role, but I'm not just looking for the NBA. I'm there for the education and to win a national championship."
The 6-foot-6 swingman is rated No. 9 overall in the Class of 2013 by Scout and FOXSports.
"Kentucky adds another scoring punch on the perimeter by adding Young," said Scout/FoxSports national basketball analyst Evan Daniels. "He's a very good athlete that can score, rebound and defend his position."
Young, who was one of the top scorers in this spring and summer's Nike EYBL circuit, gives UK three of the top 10 prospects in the senior class after Texas twins Andrew Harrison and Aaron Harrison committed to the Cats last week. They are rated No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, for 2013.
"Young is a nice complement to Aaron Harrison on the perimeter," Daniels said. "With those two on the wings, Kentucky won't have to worry about scoring."
"I'm excited," Young said about the prospects of playing with the Harrison twins. "I've been seeing them over the summer. They're great players, and I can't wait to play with them."
Andrew Harrison was interviewed by ESPNU shortly after Young's announcement, calling it "a point guard's dream" to have Young and his brother, an elite shooting guard, on each side of him.
Kentucky also has a commitment from Bullitt East (Ky.) forward Derek Willis, a Top 100 prospect.
With a strong backcourt already in place, the Cats will now turn the focus to frontcourt players like four-star California center Marcus Lee, who is expected to visit for "Big Blue Madness" on Friday, and five-star Texas power forward Julius Randle, who visited Lexington last month. Five-star California power forward Aaron Gordon, who is expected to visit later this month, is also in the mix, as well as four-star New Jersey forward Tyler Roberson and four-star North Carolina center Kennedy Meeks.
And then there's five-star 2014 Canadian wing Andrew Wiggins, who is considering a reclassification to the senior class. The Huntington (W.Va.) Prep standout is considered the top prospect in the country regardless of class and by all accounts has UK and Florida State at the top of his list.
Many analysts believe that Calipari, coming off the 2012 national championship, will be in a position to sign the highest-rated recruiting class in the history of college basketball.
