Baker‘s Main Focuses: State Title and College

Posted Feb 22, 2012

Detroit Consortium senior point guard Travon Baker talks about his current college interest, which includes two scholarship offers, and a goal to win a Class C State Championship.

2012 point guard Travon Baker of Detroit Consortium is one of the more underrated players in the state of Michigan.

In his senior year, Travon’s college interest has picked up and he received his first offer from Findlay University.

“Findlay University was the first school to offer me and has been recruiting me since my sophomore year, so I definitely hold them in high esteem.”

Baker has visited Findlay many times over the last couple of months and has expressed that he likes the small environment and the fact that he has a chance to play early or possibly even start.

“The campus was nice. It’s a small setting, which I can appreciate since I come from a small school. I was told I would have a huge chance to play early, possibly even start and that was huge for me. Playing time is very important to me because it gives me an opportunity to get earlier experience on the court and develop early chemistry with my teammates."

Recently, Baker went on an official visit to Northern Illinois in which he received an offer. He enjoyed the big campus feel and the fact that he can have a nice role on the Huskies even as a freshman.

“I loved the campus and the area. It’s not far from Chicago, which is great. I was told I could expect to get immediate playing time and would have a significant role on the Huskies.”

When asked about his first division one offer he replied, “It’s a great feeling receiving any scholarship offer, but that first division one offer is something special. I hope to receive more division one offers as the end of the season approaches.”

Baker is expected to help lead the Detroit Consortium Cougars to a Class C State Championship this season. Consortium fell short last season in Class C Semi Finals losing to Schoolcraft High School.

“Last year was supposed to be are year; we were expected to be back-to-back Class C State Champions. To come that close and lose, has left a bitter taste in my mouth. This is my senior year. I would like to leave with a Championship. There is no excuse for us not to win it all this season, we have everything we need to win, great players, great coaches, experience and the pure will to win.”

Currently, he is also receiving interest from Florida Memorial, Delaware State, Bethune Cookman and a few more division two schools.

“I am happy to have college interest and offers, but right now my main goal is to finish my senior year strong and win a Class C State Championship. I also believe I have an opportunity to get some more late offers, so I plan to wait for the time being on making a commitment.”
